Technology Note

1. For private use
All delegates will be able to sign onto the university LAN as guests and access the Web. Some desktop computers (PCs and Macs) will be available in the Media Lobby (the conference reception area) for private use.
2. For workshops, demonstrations and presentations
There are two types of room that we shall be using at the conference:
a. Computer laboratories
There are five non-CALL computer laboratories (i.e. general-purpose labs) available for use:
  • 3 with NT machines that are 233+MHz with 64mb of memory with 540/640mb MO, CD-ROM and floppy disk drives
  • Installed software: Office97, Netscape Communicator 4.7 (both Japanese versions)
  • 2 with UNIX machines (FreeBSD - including X Windows) that are 350mhz with 60mb of memory, CD-ROM and floppy disk drives
  • Browser: Netscape Communicator 4.7  (Japanese version)
Note that there are NO Macintosh labs.

    b. Rooms with LAN access and projection facilities
Facilities in the other type of room vary. We can provide each presenter with:

  • A notebook PC with an Internet browser and LAN card and cable to connect to the Web
  • Make: Toshiba DynaBookSS - Portege 3000
Installed software: Windows 98 OS, Office 95, Internet Explorer 4.0, PowerPoint 97 (all Japanese versions)
Plus: Peripheral Floppy and CD-ROM drives to go with each machine
  • An adapter (Mini I/O adapter PA2729UJ) with which to connect the notebook PC to the teacher's panel and which you can use to project output (PowerPoint, Web Pages, video etc) from the PC
  • A ceiling-mounted beam projector with screen(s) onto which you can project the output from the notebook PC
  • 3. Note for presenters and other pre-registered participants intending to bring their own machines
If your portable (PC or Mac) has a 15-pin analog VGA external monitor port (which our notebooks don't have!) you can send output to our projectors without using a special adapter. If your machine also has a LAN card with attached LAN cable (10BASE-T and up) then you can also access the Web from the presenter's console. Unfortunately, we cannot provide LAN cards, and the number of spare LAN cables is extremely limited, so presenters using their own equipment will need to bring their own cards and cables. The same goes for other pre-registered participants; many of our classrooms have all-seat Internet access, and while we encourage the use of these facilities we will not be able to supply you with LAN cards or cables to connect to the Web.
    IMPORTANT
Requests for specific equipment, pre-installation of software etc must be submitted well in advance of the conference. We will not be able to pre-install any software on the conference days (10th-11th June). We cannot accept responsibility for technical problems resulting from sudden changes to equipment requirements.
In addition, we strongly recommend that presenters bring some alternative presentation media (e.g. HTML pages with screen shots, screen shots on OHP transparencies, even (!) paper handouts) as backup in case software does not work as expected.

Please direct your technical queries to Paul Brocklebank (Site Chair) at cpaulb@media.teu.ac.jp.
