A Computer System for Automatically Identifying Text Structure in Writing

summary: Teaching learners the common structural patterns used in different types of texts is a necessary element in any writing course. In this paper, I propose a computer system that uses machine learning to automatically identify the structure of texts, enabling teachers to quickly discover important structural features of writing in different contexts, and also effectively evaluate particular texts as being good or bad exemplars for use in the classroom.

summary: The epenthetic (extra) vowel in Japanese EFL speech is a major source of misunderstanding. The notions of categorical perception and syllable-timed CV phonetic structure help to illuminate this problem. For a demonstration, a Japanese utterance can be modified using a sound editor to more closely resemble native production, and a paper version of this demonstration can be used in the ordinary classroom.
