Bell, Book, and Computer: A textbook-moderated CALLL writing course
-
This is a practical presentation 85mins in English intended for instructors of a newbie, user level
summary: So-called "general education" university English courses operate under time, equipment, and class-size constraints that preclude an on-line, individualized CALLL approach. An alternative is CALLL writing courses that are organized around a textbook. A text can familiarize students with objectives, background and develop skills specific to tasks, and provide templates for computer writing tasks. The catch is that such textbooks must be custom-designed by instructors! This presentation outlines how that can be accomplished.
presenter(s): David Greene (Kochi University of Technology)
bio: David Greene teaches a 1st-year CALLL writing course at a technical university. He is interested in how to improve basic paragraph-level technical writing skills through off-line computer writing tasks.

Creating an automatic TA in an English chat session
-
This is a mostly theoretical presentation 85mins in English , Japanese intended for authors, instructors of all levels
summary: We think that the collocation of verbs and nouns can be a trigger for an automatic TA to enhance chat participation. The difficulties lie in deciding what statements could be good triggers and what messages a TA should deliver without being intrusive. It is technically a big challenge to create a human-like TA. We will discuss the problems by referring to the previous chat sessions and show how a TA can be activated.
